For a day at the seaside, it is handy to take wind, sand, temperature and how much you will walk into account. A jumpsuit, trousers, blouse or T-shirt can all work. Bring an extra layer when the weather forecast gives reason to and choose shoes that suit the promenade, beach or restaurant.

What makes a day at the seaside different?
On the coast the weather can change quickly and the difference between promenade, beach and restaurant is big. So think above all practically: enough room to move, an extra layer when it blows and clothing you know how to treat for sand or salt.
Four rules for the coast
- Choose colours you like. White, cream, light blue and sand are classic coastal shades, but dark or brighter colours can work just as well.
- Check wind and temperature. Bring a cardigan or jacket if the weather calls for it.
- Choose flat, sturdy shoes. You walk over stones, wood and sand.
- Watch out for loose parts in strong wind. Wide skirts and scarves are fine, but can be impractical when it blows hard.
Look 1: the jumpsuit
The cream Clarissa is a tailored-fit linen blend jumpsuit with an elasticated waistband. As one piece, it is easy to style. Combine it with shoes that suit your route and possibly bring an extra layer.
Look 2: striped blouse and white trousers
The light blue striped Odette is tailored-fit and combines with the white Cosette, ultra high-waist slim-straight trousers of 32 inch. Only roll up the sleeves if that is comfortable for you; the blouse does not have to be worn in one fixed way.
Look 3: short sleeve and cape
The light blue Helena is tailored-fit with a contrasting collar and cuffs. The white Isadora cape T-shirt is regular-fit. The cape is a style element, not a replacement for a warm layer in strong wind.
Look 4: striped T-shirt and jeans
For a relaxed walk, choose the Fiori in light blue stripes, a fine-knit T-shirt with tweed look and buttons (79.9% viscose and 20.1% polyamide). It is soft, drapes nicely and suits jeans, white trousers or a skirt. Bring a thin cardigan for when the wind picks up.
Promenade or beach?
The difference between a walk along the promenade and an hour on the beach is big. On the promenade a polished outfit with flat shoes fits. On the sand you want clothing you can roll up and a bag you can zip shut. If you choose a day with both, bring light trousers that you can roll up at the ankle and shoes you can easily take off. That way you switch effortlessly between the two worlds.
Colour and print at the seaside
Sand, white, light blue and grey give a classic coastal look, but you do not have to adapt to the landscape. Prints and dark colours can work just as well. In bright sun, fabric thickness, ventilation and exposure play a part in how warm clothing feels.
A day at the sea in a table
| Moment | Outfit | Extra |
|---|---|---|
| Walk along the promenade | Jumpsuit or trousers with top | Cardigan, sunglasses |
| Lunch at a beach pavilion | Blouse, white trousers | Flat sandals |
| An hour on the sand | Light trousers rolled up | Towel or blanket |
| Dinner at sunset | Blouse or top with cardigan | A warmer layer |
What do you bring?
- A bag with a zip or closed flap, against sand and wind.
- A thin cardigan or jacket for the wind.
- Sunglasses and a hat or cap that stays on well.
- Sunscreen and a bottle of water.
- A small cloth to sit on or wrap around your shoulders.
Common mistakes
- Wearing heels or smooth soles on stones, wood or sand.
- Not taking the current wind and temperature into account.
- Wearing clothing that you do not know how to treat for sand, salt or stains.
- Bringing a bag without a closure that fills up with sand.
Salt, sand and wind: how to care for your clothing
Shake dry sand out of clothing before you wash. You can rinse salt marks out with fresh water if the material allows it. Then wash according to the garment label. You will find more about washing on our care instructions page.
