If you are a petite woman, it is best to choose trousers with a high or ultra high waist, a straight, slim-straight or slightly flared leg and a length that falls exactly on or just above the ankle. A high waist lengthens your legs, a calm leg keeps the line continuous, and the right length stops fabric bunching at your shoe. Colour helps too: trousers and shoes in the same shade make your legs look longer. Below you can read what to look for in each respect, which leg shapes work best and when you are better off going to the tailor.

Why fit works differently for petite women

Most trousers are designed for an average height. If you are shorter, not only does the leg come out too long, but the waist, the knee height and the pleats also sit in a different place from intended. Trousers that hang elegantly on a taller woman can look heavy or short on you. The good news: with a few deliberate choices you will find trousers that actually lengthen your silhouette.

1. Choose a high waist

This is the most important rule. A high waist places the start of your legs higher, which makes them look longer. An ultra high-waist style goes a step further. The Cosette in white, ultra high-waist slim-straight trousers, is a good example: the high waist and the straight, slim leg together form one long line. The Philippa in beige, ultra high-waist trousers with pleats, also works well, as long as you tuck your top in so the waist stays visible.

2. Pay attention to the leg shape

Leg shape Effect on a petite frame Tip
Slim-straight Continuous line, lengthens the leg The safest choice for every day
Flared ankle-length Playful, lengthens with the right shoe Wear with a small heel or platform sole
With pleats, wide Elegant, but can look heavy Only with a high waist and tucked-in top
Slim-fit ankle-length Light and modern Show the ankle for an airy effect
Very wide and long Can overwhelm you Only with heels and exactly the right length

High-waisted trousers with pleats such as the Arabelli in navy can look beautiful, as long as the pleats are not too deep and the leg does not have too much fabric. Flared ankle-length trousers such as the Florence in white work well if the leg ends just above the ankle: that shows a strip of skin or tights, which makes the leg lighter. A slim-fit ankle-length style, such as the Sabine in black, is the most minimalist option.

3. The right length

Length is where it often goes wrong for petite women. Trousers that bunch at your shoe shorten your legs. A few rules of thumb:

  • Straight and slim legs: the hem just touches the top of your shoe or ends a centimetre above it.
  • Ankle-length styles: the hem ends at the narrowest point of your ankle, not halfway up the calf.
  • Flared and wide legs: the hem falls to a centimetre above the ground when you wear the shoes you most often wear with them.

So choose your shoe before you have the length altered. Trousers that are perfect with a five-centimetre heel are too long with flat loafers.

4. Colour as an ally

Colour can lengthen your silhouette just as well as cut. Three tricks that always work:

  1. Tone on tone: a top and trousers in the same or a related colour create one continuous line. Think cream on cream or navy on navy.
  2. Shoes in the colour of your trousers: black shoes under black trousers, nude or beige under light ones. Your legs then continue to the ground.
  3. Light colour below, dark above does not always work; preferably keep contrasts above the waist, near your face.

5. The top plays a part

A long, wide jumper over trousers makes your upper body longer and your legs shorter. So choose tops that end at or just above the waist, or tuck your top in. A short knitted polo or a tailored blouse works better than a long tunic. A V-neck or open collar also creates a vertical line near your face, which lengthens too.

6. Shoes

You don't have to wear high heels. Loafers with a slightly thicker sole, ankle boots with a small heel or trainers with a platform sole already give enough height. Avoid ankle straps and shoes that cut your ankle off horizontally; a shoe with a low, V-shaped opening actually lengthens.

7. Have what doesn't fit altered

Trousers that fit perfectly at the waist but are too long are an excellent purchase: shortening is simple and relatively inexpensive. Take care with flared styles: when shortened, part of the wide bottom disappears, so the leg may fall differently. So always have a tailor measure with the shoes on. With pleats and pockets it is trickier; moving those costs more and doesn't always work.

Office and evening

At the office, dark slim-straight or ankle-length trousers with a short knit or a tucked-in blouse work best: polished, uncluttered and lengthening. For an evening out you can combine a flared style with a small heel; the wide leg moves beautifully as you walk. Then choose a top in the same colour for maximum length.

How to find your trousers

Start with a high waist and a straight leg in a neutral colour, and build from there. Once you know which length and waist suit you, you will choose faster and with more confidence. Frequently asked questions

Which trousers make petite women look taller?

Trousers with a high or ultra high waist and a straight or slim-straight leg, worn with shoes in the same colour. A tucked-in top strengthens the effect.

Can petite women wear wide trousers?

Yes, with a high waist, a tucked-in or short top and a length that falls exactly to just above the ground. A small heel or platform sole helps.

How long should ankle-length trousers be?

The hem ends at the narrowest point of your ankle. If it falls halfway up the calf, the leg looks shorter.

Can I have flared trousers shortened?

You can, but when shortened part of the wide bottom disappears. Have a tailor measure with the shoes you will wear with them.
