You can style a knee-length skirt in many ways: with a blouse, fine-knit polo, T-shirt or cape top. Wearing it tucked in puts more emphasis on the waist; wearing it untucked gives a different proportion. The best combination depends on the cut of the top, the skirt and the occasion.

Why knee length works so well
A skirt around knee height sits between short and long and can therefore be styled both for business and in a relaxed way. Where the length ends up on the body differs per length and build. So look mainly at the actual skirt length and how it falls when you stand and sit.
The black and white Rosa are slim-fit midi skirts. In size S the length is 60 cm. Thanks to the plain colours they are easy to combine with different tops, but the final length can fall above, at or below the knee depending on your height.
Three ways to play with the waist
You do not always have to show the waist. The choice mainly changes the proportion of the outfit. These are three options:
- Fully tucked in. This brings the waistband clearly into view and makes the upper half look more compact.
- Half tucked in. This keeps part of the waist visible while the back falls loose.
- Untucked. A top of a suitable length can also fall completely loose over the skirt.
Which top for which occasion?
| Occasion | Top | Shoe |
|---|---|---|
| Office | Tailored blouse or fine-knit polo | Loafers or low-heeled pumps |
| Lunch or museum | Knitted polo with V-neck | Ballet flats or loafers |
| Summer evening or dinner | Elegant top with cape or satin look | Flat sandals or slingbacks |
| Weekend | Knitted T-shirt or sleeveless polo | White sneakers |
| Reception | Blouse in a soft colour | Pumps or elegant sandals |
Five outfits with one skirt
- Monday at the office. The Rosa in black with the Delphine blouse in shadow blue, fully tucked in. The tailored blouse with princess seams matches the skirt beautifully. Loafers and a structured bag finish it off. You will find more office looks in the Office collection.
- Lunch. The white Rosa with the cream Josephine, a slim-fit fine-knit open polo with a ribbed texture. Cream and white are close together and give a light tone-on-tone combination.
- Summer evening. The Isadora cape T-shirt in black on the white Rosa. The cape covers the shoulders, which is pleasant when it cools down, and adds movement above a calm skirt. For more evening looks, see Dinner & Dates.
- Drinks after work. The black Rosa with the black Genevieve, a slim-fit sleeveless knit with a ribbed structure. The difference in texture keeps the all-black combination visibly layered.
- Saturday in the city. The white Rosa with a striped knitted T-shirt and white sneakers. A simple outfit that still looks considered.
Choosing a colour for a black or white skirt
Black and white are both easy to combine. Black gives a lot of contrast with light tops and also works well tone-on-tone. White can be beautiful with cream, blue, black or other light shades. Different shades of white do not need to be avoided as long as the difference looks deliberate.
Shoes: what works at knee length?
Because the skirt ends just at the knee, the shoe determines the rest of the leg line. A few rules of thumb:
- Loafers and ballet flats give a flat, calm shoe line and work well for everyday use.
- Pumps or slingbacks give a more dressed-up look and change the posture and leg line.
- Flat sandals with thin straps are the lightest choice for warm days.
- Sneakers work too. Choose colour and volume based on the rest of the outfit.
- Ankle boots are an option for autumn, with or without tights depending on temperature and styling.
Common mistakes
- Judging all tops by one length rule. A longer top can work well if the proportion is chosen deliberately.
- Too much at once. A knee-length skirt is already a statement of understated elegance. A busy print above and eye-catching shoes below make it restless.
- Forgetting the sitting test. Sit down in front of the mirror. A knee-length skirt rides up slightly when you sit. For the office and receptions that is fine, but know what to expect.
From summer to autumn
The knee-length skirt moves effortlessly into September. Swap the sandals for loafers, wear a fine-knit cardigan over your top and choose deeper colours on top. A burgundy or navy knit with the black Rosa, or a cream sweater with the white one, makes the transition without needing a new wardrobe. Take a look at our knitwear and blouses for the top half.
Care
For Rosa, follow the current care label: delicate wash up to a maximum of 30 °C and 600 rpm, wash inside out, line dry and iron at a maximum of 110 °C. Only use a hanger if it does not damage the waistband.

Frequently asked questions
Which top goes with a knee-length skirt?
Blouses, polos, T-shirts and cape tops can all work. Tucking in is one option, but not required.
Can a knee-length skirt be worn to the office?
Yes, if the dress code at your workplace allows it. Combine it with a blouse, polo, cardigan and shoes that suit that setting.
Which shoes do you wear with a knee-length skirt in summer?
Flat sandals, ballet flats, loafers or slim white sneakers. For a formal occasion, choose slingbacks or pumps with a low heel.
Is a white skirt suitable for the evening?
Certainly. Combine a white skirt with a dark top for contrast, or keep it light with cream and add warmth with gold-coloured jewellery.
