At 5 degrees, several layers often work well: a light base layer, a warm middle layer and a coat that suits wind and rain. Indoors you can easily take a layer off.

Why layers are practical
The first cold days of the year call for different choices than in September. The temperature difference between outside and inside can be large. With several thin layers you can adjust your clothing more easily.
With layers it is easier to respond to temperature, wind and activity.
How to build up the layers
- Base layer. Choose a thin T-shirt or vest top that feels pleasant on the skin.
- Middle layer. Choose a cardigan or an open-knit polo. For men that is the Maximilian wool cardigan in beige made of 100% wool. For women it is the Augusta open-knit polo in cream made of wool and cashmere.
- Outer layer. Choose a mid-length wool coat or a quilted jacket. The length runs to just past the hip or down to the knee.
The formulas per temperature
The table below shows how to adjust the layers when it gets colder or milder. They are guidelines, not rules. Everyone feels warmth differently.
| Temperature | Base layer | Middle layer | Outside |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 degrees | T-shirt or polo | Thin cardigan | Light jacket |
| 7 degrees | Fine polo | Cardigan or knitted polo | Mid-length coat |
| 5 degrees | Merino polo | Wool cardigan | Wool coat, scarf |
| 2 degrees | Merino polo | Thick sweater | Warm coat, hat, gloves |
Two complete outfits
For men this combination works well. Wear the Trenton under the Maximilian cardigan. Add the Frederick pleated trousers in coffee brown. They have a brushed interior and therefore feel soft. Add a dark coat and suede shoes.
For women a different build works. Start with the Philippa ultra high-waist trousers in brown and a fine T-shirt. Add the Augusta and keep the Veronique fine-knit cardigan in light grey made of 100% lyocell in your bag as an extra layer. That way you are ready for a cold morning and a warm meeting room.
Wool as a warm layer
Wool can absorb moisture and therefore often keeps feeling pleasant. Read more about merino wool and about cashmere if you want to know the difference.
For washing and drying, always follow the care label. On our page about the care instructions you can read how to go about it.
At the office and on the way
The tricky part of 5 degrees is the transition. You walk from the train to the office in the cold. There you sit for three hours in a heated room. So hang up your coat and keep the middle layer on. If it gets too warm, take off the cardigan and wear the polo.
If you cycle to work, allow for extra wind and take gloves with you if needed.
Choosing the coat
A good coat for this temperature has three qualities. It is roomy enough to wear a cardigan underneath. It closes well at the neck. And it has a length that suits your trousers. Above all, choose a coat length that falls comfortably over your trousers and gives enough coverage.
Pay attention to the colour too. A dark coat in navy, grey or black suits almost all the outfits above. A beige coat brings more light in the dark months. Choose what suits the rest of your wardrobe.
Common mistakes in the first cold
On the first cold days it is easy to dress too lightly or too warmly. Build up layers step by step and adjust them to the day.
Another mistake is a middle layer that is too tight. Then there is no air left to hold warmth. Choose a middle layer that fits over your base layer without pinching.
Check the neckline too. A scarf or a higher collar can be comfortable in the wind.
Pay attention to details on the outside too
- Scarf. A wool scarf keeps your neck warm and is easy to take off.
- Gloves. Thin leather gloves suit every coat.
- Shoes. Choose a closed shoe with a sturdy sole. Wet paving stones are slippery.
- Socks. Wool socks keep your feet warm.
You will find more choice in the men's coats and jackets and the women's coats and jackets.
